Dear Festividder,

Thank you so much for making a vid for me! Some general likes and dislikes:

- I love character studies, action vids, humorous vids, and vids that do interesting things with shot composition
- Feel free to use basically any kind of music, no matter if it's popular or niche. If it fits the source and your idea, I'll enjoy it!

DNWs

- I find it very hard to parse vids that add source dialog over song lyrics
- Slurs in song lyrics

Other than that, please just make whatever makes you happy.

Here's my requests:

Sweet Smell of Success (1957)

This movie taps into one of my great weaknesses: A terrible weasel of a man who also happens to be completely devoted to another, even more terrible man. A vid about these two would make me very happy.

Uncut Gems (2019)

Would you believe I watch this movie to relax? One of my favorite genres is just "Really stressed out character never gets a single break." I also believe it makes for great vid material.

친절한 금자씨 | Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005)

You just have to respect Geum-Ja.

Sinners (2025)

The musical sequence in the middle of this movie is one of the best things I've ever seen live in a movie theater. Would love a vid about the smokestack twins, or just an ensemble vid. Feel free to lean into the horror if that's what you're into.

Mickey 17 (2025)

Listen, if I was Nasha I would have been angling for a clone threesome as well. I would love anything that leans into the absurdity of this movie.

Industry (TV 2020)

Another show full of problematic faves. I would absolutely adore a Harper-centric vid, but I also quite enjoy Yasmin and Gus. My dream vid would honestly be a Harper/Yasmin vid, I just love how messy they are. I'd also be interested in anything that explores the mentor-mentee dynamic gone wrong with Harper and Eric.

Hot Rod (2007)

Please make me a very silly vid for this very silly movie.

Poker Face (TV 2023)

I marathoned this show earlier in the summer and really loved how much funnier and wackier it is than I assumed from the gifs/vids I'd seen. I was also really into the late season 2 introduction of Alex and the whole (spoilery) thing that went down with her and Charlie. Would love a vid about that, or just a fun vid about Charlie solving murder mysteries.

The Pitt (TV)

What can I say about The Pitt that hasn't been said? I love this show to bits and have watched it many times at this point. Every single character is great, the ensemble is great. Any vid for this show would make me happy.

Warriors - Miranda & Davis (Album)

I can't believe LMM released a whole new musical in album form last year and I only found out about it recently! I realize this request would be very hard to fill, but I love the idea of a constructed reality vid to one of the songs from the album. My guess would be that either "If You Can Count" or "Still Breathin'" would be the most suitable to this, but would be happy for any of the other ones as well. Alternatively, using a completely different song and just trying to evoke the vibe of the musical or one of the characters would also be great!

Thank you again and happy vidding!

comments

I'm going to have to be honest here: I've had a pretty stressful year, and I've barely had time to think about vidding at all, let alone do it. I almost didn't sign up for Festivids, then decided to do it last minute after the sign-up deadline got extended. I'm hoping to get into a better headspace in the next few months, and maybe the deadline will help with that, but right now I'm having a hard time coming up with any prompts for vids at all, and I'm sorry about that.

So basically what I'm saying is: You have my permission to go nuts. Make whatever vid you feel like making for these fandoms. Vid your favorite character, or your favorite ship, or the epic multifandom crossover you've always dreamed of (as long as it's mostly the fandoms I picked - good luck!)

If you're looking for general guidance, feel free to peruse my previous Dear Vidder letters.

Thank you for making a vid for me!

comments

See last year's letter for details.

Films directed by Bob Fosse (Umbrella)
The choreography!!! No one's ever really managed to put dance on film the way Fosse has, and I would love to see it in vid form. Feel free to only use the musical movies, though I'd also be perfectly happy with something that incorporates other aspects as well. I would also be fine with including outside source in the form of other adaptions of his work (e.g. Chicago) or the Fosse/Verdon TV show.

Taskmaster (UK TV)
I would honestly love anything, whether it's about Greg and/or Alex, or about the contestants, or even the Taskmaster house. I'm especially fond of Alex Horne being a little shit, and would love a vid about the contentious relationship between him and some of the contestants.

パプリカ | Paprika (2006)
Another one that I'm just going to keep requesting every year. Would love a vid that captures the visuals in an interesting way, or alternatively a Song Seo-rae character study.

Search Party (TV)
A vid focusing on any of the four main characters, but especially Dory, would be lovely. Please go absolutely as wild as you like.

The Woman King (2022)
This movie completely blew me away, I just want there to be vids for it. A vid about any of the Agojie characters, or about them as a group would be great.

Thanks so much and happy vidding!

comments

It has certainly been a year! Started off with a real festivids bang, and then immediately fell into a fandom obsession that lasted all year. The result: A frankly unreasonable amount of vids. Hasn't happened to me in a while!

January
Hell And You - What We Do in the Shadows (TV)
Turn the Lights Off - What We Do in the Shadows (TV)
It's Gonna Be Me - What We Do in the Shadows (TV)
I Knew You Were Trouble - Miss Sherlock (TV)
Me and Bernstein down by the schoolyard - All the President's Men (1976)
Sugar Town - Diner (2019)
Rich Friends - 기생충 | Parasite (2019)

February
Dayman - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid

March
Fan Behavior - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid
Short King Miyagi - Karate Kid

April
Everybody Loves Me - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid
Baby One More Time - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid

May
Mamma Mia - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid

June
Tubthumping - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid
True Love - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid

September
I Did Something Bad - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid

October
She Bangs - Cobra Kai/Karate Kid RPF

Total: 17

Favorite video this year (of my own)
This is really hard, but I'll go with "Everybody Loves Me" because I put all of my blorbo feelings into that vid and I love how it turned out.

Least favorite video
I felt like I could have gotten more out of "Rich Friends" but there was a deadline to consider so it didn't happen. Still happy with the end result though!

Most successful video
Going by Youtube views, it's "I Did Something Bad" which is likely because of the post-Season 5 interest boost in Cobra Kai. It's a good vid, so that's fine by me! By AO3 kudos, it's "Fan Behavior," also a vid I'm very proud of.

Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion
Everybody Loves Me. Like I said it's my favorite Cobra Kai vid I made, but it's gotten the least attention. Probably because it's not shippy. Oh well!

Most fun video
I honestly had a blast with so many of these - I'm just gonna pick "Baby One More Time" because it's such a perfect song to source match and basically vidded itself.

Video with the single sexiest moment
I gotta go with "It's Gonna Be Me" because the badass Guillermo montage can't be beat.

Biggest vid fail
I tried to do a fancam-style vid with "Short King Miyagi" and I think I mostly failed at the format, but the vid still turned out great, so whatever.

Hardest video to make
"She Bangs," oviously. So much source! So much of it just on the verge of unusable. It was an absolute nightmare, but the heart wants what the heart wants I guess.

Most unintentionally telling video
Also "She Bangs". Not that it can really be called "unintentional," I knew exactly what I was doing there.

Things I learned this year
Between What We Do in the Shadows and Cobra Kai, I think this year more than anything taught me how to use fight scenes in a vid.

My vidding goals from last year
Last year I wrote:
"I hate to say it, but I want to try and put more effort into color work (or like, any effort at all, since I haven't really done this in vids I've published so far). I've also done a lot of thinking about the kinds of vids I choose to make. I think my biggest struggle is with sincerity; I tend to go for funny stuff, and even my more serious vids tend to have a bit of a sarcastic edge in there somewhere. Not that that's bad, but I feel it creates a certain distance between me and my work. I'd like to try to make something more heartfelt."
Now, the first part I definitely succeeded at, since I had to do a shitton of color work for all my CK vids. The second part... not so much. Maybe I need to just accept that this is who I am!

Goals for 2022
There's a couple of vids I started before I fell into Cobra Kai obsession that I really need to get back to. And I definitely want to do a better job of having premieres for cons again this year. Other than that... I rushed a lot of vids last year because I was impatient to get them out, seeking that instant gratification that comes from having an active fandom. I want to go back to letting my vids sit for a while, because it tends to improve them a lot. Also I'd like to try collaborating again, if the opportunity comes up.

comments

Dear Festividder,

As I say every year, please feel free to take my ramblings below as mere suggestions, and make whatever vid you feel excited about making first and foremost.

Rocky (Movie Series)
So, I watched all the Rocky movies this year, including the two Creeds, and I loved them (for the most part). Most of all though, I fell in love with Apollo Creed. His over-the-top showmanship, the chip on his shoulder, his hubris - he just hits a certain character archetype that I always fall for to a T. And the rivals-to-lovers arc he's got going on with Rocky over the course of the movies is just so sweet. (Still can't believe he gave Rocky his boxing shorts.) So basically, what I would love most of all would be an Apollo vid, or an Apollo/Rocky vid. For obvious reasons I would prefer you don't show or reference Apollo's death, unless it's really important for your vid idea to work, in which case I'd prefer you at least not show it in too much detail.

Blade (Movie Series)
I'm just gonna copy and paste what I wrote last year:
Obviously I'm hype for Mahershala Ali as Blade, but before that happens I would like to revel in the Blood & Gore & late-90s-early-2000s-goodness of the original Wesley Snipes trilogy once more. What I love about these movies, especially the first one, is how non-self-serious and corny they are. A vid that showcases the bonkers gory effects, amazing fight choreography and Blade's great reaction faces would be lovely.
I'm also going to add that I haven't seen the third movie, and likely won't before reveals, but don't let that stop you from using it if you wish.

Mythic Quest
Poppy Li, light of my life. I love her in all her messy, unapologetic cringefail glory, and I would be so happy to see a vid that's just about her. I also love her relationship with Ian, though I wouldn't say I ship them in a romantic sense, so a purely (romantically) shippy vid wouldn't really be my thing. But that doesn't mean it has to be strictly platonic, if you want to go for it - I do really appreciate the very undefined messiness of their whole deal, and love to see it explored. I know that's kinda vague, but I hope you catch my drift.

Search Party
This show went so bananas in its final season, I loved it. Would honestly love any vid about this, I love all the main characters (though Elliott and Dory are my favs), I love how terrible everyone is and how much it leans into the insanity.

Paprika (2006)
Also copy & pasted from last year:
This movie has sooo much fun with its creative visuals and I would just love to see someone play around with that in vid form.

The Righteous Gemstones
It's Bible Belt Succession! I marathoned through this show in January and immediately tried to come up with a vid idea that would take these incredibly silly characters and treat them with the gravitas of a typical Succession vid - something about the ugliness behind the veneer of the Gemstone family, idk - but then I got sidetracked by my karate dads show, so I never got around to it. Maybe you can help me out? :D?

Benedetta (2021)
Verhoeven doing nunsploitation? Sign me up! In all seriousness, though, I enjoyed this movie immensely and think that the visuals alone are begging to be used in a vid. I am certain I will enjoy anything you might come up with for this.

Thank you so much for making a vid for me and have fun vidding!

comments

I am so happy I was able to make a vid for this amazingly pathetic, terrible man and it worked out so well. Honorable mentions are "Do It All The Time", "Start Wearing Purple" and of course, "Defying Gravity".

Least favorite video
The one that I finished but haven't published yet because there's something missing and I haven't been able to figure out what.

Most successful video
If I go by AO3 comments, it would be "Here It Goes Again" although those results are skewed because of Festivids. "Do It All The Time" got the most Youtube views, unsurprisingly.

Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion
I can't complain!

Most fun video
Start Wearing Purple was an absolute blast to make and I always have fun rewatching it. Defying Gravity is also obviously very fun, but I was going through a really shitty time while making it so I can't say that I was having fun, really.

Video with the single sexiest moment
Hmm. Actually the Festivids I've made so far are very sexy but I can't talk about those yet. I think my sexiest vid this year is probably "Pump It" actually, mostly thanks to Christina Ricci.

Biggest vid fail
Again, there's a vid I've had lying around for most of the year but haven't posted and I might never get around to fixing it, which is something that's never happened to me before.

Hardest video to make
Definitely "Do It All The Time". Those panel effects are SO MUCH WORK. And timing everything correctly, oh man.

Most unintentionally telling video
The fact that I immediately thought of the Glee version for "Defying Gravity" is maybe a little embarrassing. But I stand by it as the right choice for the vid.

Things I learned this year
How to brighten clips and do color correction. Unfortunately now I have to do that all the time and I hate it.

My vidding goals from last year
Last year I wrote:
"I want to go back to some of the bigger projects that have been on the backburner for a while. I also want to experiment with my editing style more and maybe try some slower-paced stuff."
Well, I went back and finished "Do It All The Time" which I started in 2020. But didn't really do anything else to clear up my backlog. I did do a little bit of slower paced stuff with "No Place Like Home" and there's also some unposted vids where I've been trying that. I do think I still have a very set way of editing that I find it hard to break out of.

Goals for 2022
I hate to say it, but I want to try and put more effort into color work (or like, any effort at all, since I haven't really done this in vids I've published so far). I'd like to try to make something more heartfelt.

comments

Dear Festividder,

I'm excited to see what you come up with and I'm already sure I will love it! Please feel free to make whatever vid feels right to you, even if it doesn't match 100% with my request.

I don't have any physical triggers and I'm okay with any type of music as long as it fits the vid well.

Blade (Movie Series)
Obviously I'm hype for Mahershala Ali as Blade, but before that happens I would like to revel in the Blood & Gore & late-90s-early-2000s-goodness of the original Wesley Snipes trilogy once more. I don't quite know how to put this into words but I relate to her a lot on the "not performing gender in the way society expects" level. Also I just like vids about people being good at things and working hard for them. You don't have to involve the romance aspect of the movie but I also wouldn't mind if you did! It's cute!

Paprika (2006)
This movie has sooo much fun with its creative visuals and I would just love to see someone play around with that in vid form.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)
I rewatched this recently out of nostalgia and I think it could make for a really fun vid! I love the schemes and the cat-and-mouse aspect but also how Frank and Carl are both just deeply lonely people who bond over being forgery nerds.

Heat (1995)
This movie is a straight up romance and I would like to see a vid that reflects that. Feel free to take it in either a comedic or dramatic direction!

My Octopus Teacher (2020)
Please make me a vid about the good, good octopus girl!!!

Pimp My Ride
The height of entertainment was reached when you could turn on the TV and watch Xzibit put a million shitty TV screens into someone's car. Please take me back to the good old days.

Thank you so much for making a vid for me and have fun vidding!

comments

The Covid Situation: Even though our government is still failing at implementing any sort of sensible lockdown measures, at least the vaccination campaign has started to go a little faster. It'll probably take some time still for me to get the jab, but I feel a little easier now that the at-risk people in my life have all gotten it. I found myself the other day making actual plans to meet up with a friend in a few months, which feels very strange. It's hard to feel any sort of relief or optimism while the situation in India is continuing to be so horrifying. I encourage anyone who has the means to donate to one of the many mutual aid fundraisers that are linked here: bit.ly/MutualAidIndia
Vidukon: I may be overdoing it a little this year by taking on two vidshows and also working on a fourth premiere as part of one of my vidshows. Getting a little worried that I'm not going to make the deadline, which is only a week away at this point. I did really enjoy putting the vidshows together though. It's my first time doing this, and it was a lot more work than I thought it would be, but also very fun. I'm already trying to come up with more vidshow ideas for the future.

Posting vids: I've been failing to post my vids on here and also hadn't updated my sticky vid post for a while, so this week I went and made a bunch of backdated posts for my vids, so as not to clog up people's reading pages.
I'm having a lot of trouble with being online lately. It seems like the only way for me to function in my day-to-day live without massive anxiety is to completely stay off Twitter and isolate myself from the news as much as possible.

I'm also having a hard time even posting here. I'd like to talk about things I've been fannish about, what I've been watching, what I'm working on, but it's just not happening.

Not sure when I'll get it back (January 21st? When there's a vaccine?) but for now I'm not really seeing another way, so you won't be seeing much from me. I'm still doing Festivids, and I'm on Discord if anyone wants to talk.

Please don't be concerned about me though, I am doing pretty well all things considered, and I'm certainly one of the last people who should be complaining about their life right now.
Dear Festividder,

Thank you for making a vid for me! I say this every year, but I'll repeat it: If you already have an idea, please feel free to make whatever you want to make and take my prompts below as mere suggestions. I'm sure I will enjoy whatever you come up with.

Vid likes: Character vids, action vids, comedy vids, horror vids, fast paced editing, unexpected song choices

Vid dislikes: Lyrics overlays, using a lot of source audio, entirely fluffy shipping vids (not entirely true because I do sometimes enjoy those but it's a hard balance to strike with me)

I have no physical triggers. I'm squicked by medical stuff but can deal with it if it's not focused on too much.

The Station Agent (2003)
I saw this movie fairly recently and I thought that there should be an OT3 vid for this. So, please make me an OT3 vid for this?

Takeshi's Castle
After seeing a bunch of sports vids for various American game shows, I was reminded of this Japanese game show I was obsessed with as a kid and I thought, hey, I would like to see a vid of this. I truly have no idea, to be honest, if there are good ways to acquire this source, and if it is even viddable, but if you want to go for it that would make me very happy.

Trainspotting (Movies)
Though I probably shouldn't have been allowed to watch it, the first Trainspotting movie was one of my favorite movies as a teen. I've seen it too many times to count. The sequel that came out a couple of years ago also turned out to be pretty much everything I wanted it to be. I very much enjoyed how it deals with the theme of nostalgia and draws parallels to the original, and would love to see that represented in a vid. One thing I should note for this request is that I am very squeamish about needles, so I would appreciate if they weren't a big focus in the vid, but you don't have to avoid them completely.

The Slow Mo Guys (Youtube Channel)
Two dumbasses and a very expensive camera. I've recently been watching these videos to fall asleep and to distract myself from anxiety. So it occured to me that I've always enjoyed vidding with slow mo sequences, and therefore this show might be very viddable. I think it would be a lot of fun to mash the slow mo stuff together, or alternatively to mash all the antics the hosts get into together, or both.

기생충 | Parasite (2019)
The thing that I really want is a crossover of this movie and the Jordan Peele movie Us because I think that they have a lot of similarities in their themes and how those themes are visually represented and I think it could make for an interesting vid. I forgot to nominate Us (mostly because I already got an Us vid last year) but I'm pretty sure it's still eligible.
Of course, you don't have to make this crossover and any regular vid of this movie would also be very welcome!

绅探 | Detective L (TV)
I love Xiao Man and I would like to see a vid about her. That's pretty much it. (I realize she's a problematic character in that Good Cop kind of way and if you want to deal with that in your vid it would not be unwelcome, but a regular action vid or even a shippy vid would also be cool with me)

Hamilton (2020 film)
I just want there to be more Hamilton vids now that there can be Hamilton vids. I would especially love a Burr vid, but will take anything. Using outside source and/or doing a straight up RPF vid is also very much ok with me.

Thank you so much again and have fun vidding!

comments

Today is kind of a special day for me. It's my 5-year vidding anniversary! On this day in 2015, I posted my very first fanvid to Tumblr.

Sadly, this vid has been unavailable for a long time because of a copyright claim. I never reposted it because there were some things I wanted to fix first (wrong framerate, low-quality sources etc.) and I never fixed it because I use different software now, which means that I had to wholly recreate the vid in Vegas. And then there's the fact that, despite this being my very first vid at the time, I made the insane choice to lip-sync much of the song by rearranging the mouth movements in the clips, often frame by frame, which is quite an annoying thing to have to recreate.

But, seeing as the vid's anniversary was coming up, I finally got off my ass and did it, and I even added some credits and a few tiny fixes here and there. So here it is, my very first fanvid, remastered:

Title: Blank Space
Fandom: Gravity Falls
Character: Mabel Pines
Summary: So it's gonna be forever, or it's gonna go down in flames
Song: "Blank Space" by Taylor Swift
Runtime: 3:52
Content Notes: -

AO3

Password: mabel

comments

Vidding: Last week I was sick and got the whole week off, which I used to make a vid for Sparkle Motion. From conception of the idea to finishing the vid it took me exactly 4 days, which has got to be close to the fastest I've ever vidded something, and it was a pretty awesome experience. I literally did nothing but vid, eat and sleep during that time (actually I did go see Birds of Prey, which was great, but that was the only deviation.) This sort of vidding frenzy thing seems to happen to me only very rarely (last time was in September 2018 when I made New Born), but when it happens it's pretty much the best feeling I know. The only downside is that afterwards my brain seems to get completely depleted of dopamine for a few days and that's always hell, but I'm getting over that slump now thankfully. I don't think I'll be making Vid Big Bang though, since the deadline is this weekend and I don't even have 10% of a vid. But I might keep working on it and save it for next year!

MBMBaM: Another fun thing I've been doing is descending fully into a worryingly intense McElroy obsession, which I partly blame on such_heights for requesting the MBMBaM TV Show for festivids and starting me down this path, and also partly on teyla for enabling me every step of the way, but mostly on myself for my inability to be chill about like, anything ever in my life. Just today I decided that it would be a great idea to start listening to the entire MBMBaM backlog. Yes, starting from episode 1, which everyone including the boys themselves have informed me is a bad idea. And hoo boy, it really is rough! But in a way it's inspiring to know that these 3 douchebags from 10 years ago transformed into the genuinely decent and sweet people they are today. Maybe there's hope for men? At least that's what I'm taking away from it. And, you know, apparently I only need to make it through the first 100 episodes and then it gets better! (oof)

Birds of Prey: What an amazing romp of a movie! I'm so glad I got dragged into it, because I'm not much of a DC person and might not have seen it otherwise (although with the reception it's been getting I would have probably gotten around to it). I very much enjoy seeing a woman be allowed to fight dirty and be nasty as hell in an R-rated movie, it's incredibly cathartic to me. I will say that while I enjoyed Ewan McGregor's and Chris Messina's performances (and what great casting that is) I wasn't entirely comfortable with the evil-queer tropiness of their characters, which did bring down my enthusiasm for the movie a bit. But still, I really liked it and am very glad it exists! Can't wait to see everyone's vids for it.

comments

It seems I started using Twitter and immediately abandoned my dreamwidth for many months, my bad. I want to try and write more frequent posts again next year, and since I'm currently on a Twitter break I might as well start getting back into the habit. So hi!

I'm on holiday break, and a little sick, like most people seem to be right now, but nothing too bad. I saw the Rise of Skywalker and ended up hating it. Which sucks for many reasons, but mostly because there are still Star Wars vids I want to make, and I need to figure out how to deal with this movie. Right now I'm having a hard time even with the thought of having to go through it for clips. Maybe with a little more time and distance I'll get over that though.

Other than that, vidding is going great. I already finished two projects for Festivids and am working on a possible third. I should do one of those end of the year memes since I actually finished a lot of vids this year. I'm really happy with how things have gone. When the year started, I was making a lot of plans (my first Festivids, Vid Big Bang, two cons) and I had no idea whether I was going to be able to stick with it and finish all those projects, but I did it! It feels really good to be this productive again and I hope I can keep it up next year.

I also just finished watching the new season of the Expanse, which I mostly loved but have to say felt too short in the end. Especially the Bobbie, Chrisjen and Drummer/Ashford plotlines felt more like setup for the next season than actual story arcs. These are some of my favorite characters and it was a little excruciating for them to be so trapped and static. I hope the next season gets things moving again.

Oh, and I started playing Pokemon Go again. If anyone wants to be friends, hmu in the comments.

comments
