Serene and calm.
Jan. 21st, 2026 06:15 pmReading Jean Baudrillard these days remains rewarding and thought-provoking, except for the occasional moment where he starts talking about nuclear proliferation and I realize he's taken several hundred words to say what Tom Lehrer could manage with just a fraction of that.

Jan. 21st, 2026 03:19 pm+ I'm so behind on Snowflake Challenge, and don't really have time to put in the effort I'd like or see all the cool entries. Boo work. If the Make A Challenge rolls around again, I've come up with a low effort entry; the big one will have to wait until next year.
+ Last night's dreams were a wild mess, featuring: a matrilineal sex cult, a documentary about comedians working on a SNL clone that got big after the show (with commentary), a musical number about period poops to the tune of I wanna dance with somebody. Not featured: me.
I haven't had the time or energy to read or watch anything this trip, I think my brain is lodging a complaint?

halfamoon is a fourteen day challenge celebrating female characters in fandom, and they're looking for volunteers to sign up for a calendar day (not a theme day) and read/view/appreciate the contributions for that day.
+ (saved for myself to look over later) European alternatives for popular services.
+ Democrats have managed to get all anti-trans riders stripped from the final appropriations bills (inc HHS and Ed).
+ Anti-Aging Injection Regrows Knee Cartilage and Prevents Arthritis.
In the study, the injectable treatment not only rebuilt cartilage but also stopped arthritis from developing after knee injuries similar to ACL tears, which are common among athletes and active adults. A pill-based version of the same therapy is already being tested in clinical trials aimed at treating muscle weakness associated with aging.
+ X-Files Reboot: Ryan Coogler Shares Exciting Plot Update.
“It wouldn’t be X-Files if we didn’t do both,” Coogler said about the show’s format. “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy.”
If this man brings us back monster of the week shenanigans? PRAISE BE.

Jan. 20th, 2026 10:15 pmDear Crow Contracts Creator(s),
Jan. 20th, 2026 09:20 pmFirst of all, relax! I'm far from being picky, and I can pretty much guarantee that I'll love whatever you decide to create for me. These are nothing but guidelines, for you to take to heart or ignore to your heart's content. Also, hey! You're writing me fic or drawing me art! That's automatically a good reason for me to love you, no matter what. So, please, keep that in mind. Trust me, you can pretty much do no wrong. ♥

Doing just fine.
Jan. 20th, 2026 08:15 pmIt's been well below freezing all day, and the only time I've spent outdoors was the pair of bike rides to and from the gig location, which itself is barely a 20 block ride. It was more than enough for my fingers and ears to get uncomfortably chilled, though I take it as a point of pride that continuing to mask up means my nose and mouth are just fine. I'm still thinking often on how safe I am for this cold snap - a safe place to sleep, hot water, layers to bundle up. Mostly, the tiredness comes from having rearranged a fairly sizable home library's substantial fiction section, up and down a stepladder, picking up armfuls of books over and over, and it's not digging a ditch, but between hours of that and the cold, I'm feeling pretty wiped.
I think next time I go, I'll bring a canned coffee with me. See about heading this off ahead of time.

Guess I can't complain about this trip anymore...

The oddest thing is, usually I take pictures of the Northern Lights and they turn out so disappointing compared to the actual thing I saw; yesterday all I could see were faint white lights, and the colors only came up through my camera. No clue what would cause that. Still, a good time was had oooo'ing and aaahhhh'ing.
Things are happening at full speed this trip lol. I haven't even had time to look at my second batch of orca pictures from yesterday (we've left them behind now).
Comfort Foods
Jan. 19th, 2026 08:54 pmI've been trying various new foods from Aldi (and experimenting with ways of cooking them in some cases), and I've found my new favorite comfort food for cold winter nights.
A bowl of their creamy curry bisque with toast made with bread, butter, and their shredded swiss & gruyère cheese is absolutely delicious. I've found it works really well for when I want something relatively quick and filling that's not too heavy.
I've also found a yummy way of using up russet potatoes that are starting to go a bit wrinkly or getting too many eyes on them, which I have happen way too often since it's just me eating them and even I struggle to make it through an entire small bag of potatoes before they start showing their age. I'll peel one and chop it up into something resembling cubes, toss it in a teaspoon or so of olive oil, and then add garlic power, onion powder, salt, pepper, and paprika. Then I dump it in my air fryer on 400°F for twenty minutes, shaking them halfway through.
The potatoes are great by themselves with some sour cream/ketchup/ranch/whatever you want to use, or they work as a side dish for breakfast or dinner either one. I especially enjoy them with an over easy egg and a slice or two of bacon (which I've also started making in the air fryer since my microwave here in the hotel is on the fritz again).

Jan. 19th, 2026 08:15 pmI've got work tomorrow. If I keep saying it, maybe I'll believe it ahead of time.
It's more of a gig than a job - my parents knew some people who needed their home library alphabetized and reorganized, and we met last week to see if we'd be a good fit. It turns out we are, so for at least two full working days a week for the next few weeks, I'll be heading a few blocks uptown to get paid to do what I went to school to learn how to do. Alphabetizing novels by author is one thing; working with an individual to figure out their needs for their personal library and how to organize within that is another. So far I suggested moving all the kids' books to the two children's bedrooms, and creating a city/travel section as would be useful for them, though not for others.
I'm going back to packing my own lunch. Though as it's in someone else's apartment and they've said I can use their mugs and their tea, I might not need to pack my own silverware. But I might, just to be on the safe side about these things.
